ADHD Test

Do you think you may need an ADHD test? Individuals with ADHD can often forget to complete important tasks including homework. They might act without thinking and show signs of inattention. Another common symptom of ADHD is the inability to keep still. Individuals may be hyperactive.

An ADHD test can help determine if you or your child has ADHD. Because ADHD is a disability, people with ADHD are entitled to reasonable adjustments (accommodations or access arrangements) in examinations. Children with ADHD should have additional support at school on an ongoing basis. This support can be incorporated into their Educational and Health Care Plan (EHCP).

People at university with ADHD are entitled to Disabled Students Allowance for extra time and specialist support such as specialist tutors; and information technology applications that help students who have ADHD improve their study skills and ultimately examination results.

ADHD Assessment for Children



Sometimes, it is difficult for parents to identify whether their children have ADHD because children are often naturally hyperactive; however, when the child shows very high signs of hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention, it is always worth having your child assessed for ADHD. In child ADHD assessments, teachers and individuals who know the child well can often contribute to the assessment process. Teachers who know the child well will be aware if the child fails to pay attention in class and is more active than other children. We often ask for school reports in our children and adolescent ADHD assessments, as symptoms of ADHD are often evident in school reports, even if not labelled as such .


Often, children with ADHD are wrongly categorised as being naughty or disruptive, and it is, therefore, essential to quickly identify whether the child has ADHD so that the proper support can be put in place and that they do not fall behind in their education. It is also essential to have a diagnosis because, without it, the child may be labelled as disruptive or lazy and consequently have sanctions levelled against them for unruly behaviour, which in extreme cases can include expulsion.

Rather than a large proportion of the information being provided by the parents to inform the ADHD diagnosis, most of the information will come from the client and from someone who knows the client well .

Our ADHD assessments involve a detailed clinical interview with a very experienced Chartered Psychologist and completing the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales (Second Edition) or Conners4 (for children) and the Behavioural Inventory of Executive Function. One of the rating forms can be achieved by someone who knows the person being assessed well. Additional rating scales can be provided for £100. Additionally, there is also an assessment of working memory and processing speed. If you require a psychiatrist consultation and medication for ADHD, the cost of each ADHD titration session is £300 per half hour. After the right type of ADHD medication and right dose has been determined our psychiatrist can develop a shared care agreement with your GP so that your GP can continue to prescribe the ADHD medication subject to ongoing review by our psychiatrist.



Cognitive Assessments to Support ADHD Assessments


Many people will benefit from a cognitive assessment as part of an enhanced ADHD assessment. Our cognitive assessments help determine whether the individual has a learning disability and ADHD. With individuals with high IQ scores, the cognitive assessment can also help to identify disparities between intelligence and academic or occupational performance. The cost of a Level 1 cognitive assessment is £475 if the examinee requires a cognitive assessment to be released within four weeks and £950 if the examinee requires the cognitive assessment report within seven days.

Coaching, Therapy, and Additional Consultation Meetings


We provide ongoing treatment through coaching, CBT, counselling, and tuition, which is charged at £100 per 30-minute session. If you require mediation, you must book a consultation with our psychiatrist following your assessment to obtain a prescription. The cost of the consultation is £300 per 30-minute session. In all cases where the examinee requires medication, we recommend that they tell their GP that they wish to exercise their right to have a private ADHD diagnosis. We can write a detailed letter to an examinee’s GP following diagnosis; the cost is £100.



We also provide tuition support with studies on coaching to improve executive function. Our charge for this service is £100 per hour.

Support and Access to Funding if You Have ADHD

“An ADHD test is used to determine whether the symptoms are ADHD or other conditions such as learning disabilities, dyslexia, reactions to significant life events, psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. These conditions may often coexist with ADHD. It is also essential to distinguish whether the individual has a behavioural disorder such as conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder. Finally, it is crucial to eliminate other medical conditions such as thyroid problems, neurological conditions, epilepsy and sleep disorders before a diagnosis of ADHD is made.”

ADHD Assessment

There are various ADHD tests. Your general medical practitioner, psychiatrist, or a paediatrician might carry out a medical diagnosis of ADHD. This would allow the individual to obtain medication to help control some of the adverse effects of ADHD. While some individuals find medication helpful, others find that medication does not help their ADHD.

Psychologists, on the other hand, carry out educational and occupational assessments of ADHD. These ADHD tests and assessments provide the individuals with an in-depth understanding of how ADHD impacts on their day-to-day functioning in education and employment.

ADHD may, for example, have an adverse effect on the ability of a candidate for a job to participate in an assessment centre fairly. Similarly, ADHD might adversely impact on an employee’s performance ratings and thus make it more difficult for them to stay in employment. Because ADHD is a disability, individuals with a diagnosis of ADHD will be protected under the Equality Act 2010. The employer, therefore, should make the necessary reasonable adjustments.

Once ADHD has been diagnosed through an ADHD assessment. An individual with ADHD may well be entitled to a free grant from Access to Work to help them stay in their job or run their own business. Individuals with ADHD may be particularly susceptible to unemployment.

Some individuals with ADHD may be more liable to have frequent car accidents; get in trouble with the law, and engage in substance abuse. Individuals with ADHD are often said to have unstable relationships and may be liable to suicide attempts.

ADHD Assessments by Expert Psychologists

Advanced assessments Ltd uses a comprehensive and robust ADHD assessment process. The assessment process involves a clinical interview with a Chartered Psychologist, completion of self-assessment forms and in most cases the completion of rating forms by another person that knows the person who is being assessed.

Observations of the individual concerned are carried out, and their behaviour is evaluated against the symptoms of ADHD that are set out in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (Fifth Edition). The expert psychologist might use the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults (DIVA), or the ADHD Child Evaluation Diagnostic Interview for Children.At the end of the process, a detailed report is produced. Cognitive assessments are also carried out as part of the ADHD test, to examine issues such as how the individual with ADHD processes information. Our expert psychologists use the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (Fourth UK Edition) for adults or the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (Fifth UK edition) or the Wide Range Intelligence Test. Because some individuals with ADHD also have problems with their working memory, we carry out assessments of working memory using the Wechsler Memory Scale (Fourth UK Edition) or the Test of Memory and Learning (Second Edition). We will also assess provessing speed using the Comprehensive Phonological Processing Test (Second Edition) or the Symbol Digit Modalities Test.

Our ADHD tests also include an assessment of executive functioning; we use the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BREIF2). This test allows us to obtain information from the individual, and someone who knows the individual well to gather information about the executive function of the individual who is undergoing the ADHD assessment. We examine behavioural regulation, emotion regulation and cognitive regulation with this test.

Our expert psychologists also use the Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System (Third Edition) to obtain information from the individual about how they function, socially, cognitively, at work, and with respect to health and safety.

The ADHD assessment also uses one of two other gold standard ADHD tests. For children, we use the Conners 4. For Adults, we use the Connors Adult ADHD Rating Scales (CAARS) second edition. This allows us to obtain information from the individual, and other people that know the individual well about their symptoms. It also allows us to determine whether the individual has other conditions such as oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder.

ADHD Symptoms

"In examination settings, individuals with ADHD are very easily distracted. Many of the individuals that we assess failed to read the examination questions properly and answer a different question than the one which was asked by the examiner. Some individuals process information very slowly. People with ADHD are often said to be impulsive, disorganised and had difficulty setting priorities. They may exhibit poor time management skills."

It is essential to recognise that the symptoms in individuals with ADHD vary. The diagnosis has now been refined to combine what was called Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) into one category Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Individuals are classified as having either a combined presentation; a predominantly inattentive presentation; or a predominantly hyperactive presentation.

The Key Symptoms of ADHD Are as Follows:

Inattention ― (a minimum of six of the following symptoms):

  • Frequently does not pay attention and makes many mistakes at school or at work which may appear careless.
  • Frequently finds it hard to focus and pay attention when carrying out academic work, playing or during other tasks.
  • Frequently fails to listen when others are talking to the individual (they seem to daydream).
  • Frequently does not finalise academic work or tasks at work.
  • Frequently fails to participate in tests that need focused intellectual or mental effort.
  • Frequently misplaces things for important projects such as key materials for schoolwork and other important items needed to function on a day-to-day basis.
  • Is frequently side-tracked by other things that might be happening or thoughts that may flash across their mind.
  • Frequently forgets to complete tasks, fails to attend appointments or pay bills.

Hyperactivity and Impulsivity ― a minimum of six of the following symptoms:

  • Frequently fidgets; moves around in their seat or taps their hands.

  • Frequently does not stay in their seat at times when staying in their place is expected, such as during the workplace or in class.
  • Frequently climbs or runs when they should not do. Adults or young people may continually feel restless.
  • Frequently finds it impossible to participate in games or other leisurely activities without making a lot of noise.
  • Is frequently always on the go, seeming as if they have uncontrollable energy.
  • Frequently never seems to stop talking.
  • Frequently gives the answer before another person has finished answering the question; seems to interrupt other people during conversations.
  • Frequently struggles to wait their turn in a queue.
  • Frequently intrudes or barges into other people’s activities, conversations or tries to take control of what other people are doing without being invited to do so.
